Making your own natural dyes is a fun activity for kids and adults alike. This is my family’s second year using natural dyes and a tradition we hope to continue.
We used Turmeric, Beet, coffee, Red Cabbage, and Onion skins to make our dyes although you could experiment with many different vegetables.
For the onion skin and cabbage dyes I filled a mason jar half full with the material and topped with boiling water. I let the solution sit overnight before straining off the solid material, reserving the liquid.
The turmeric dye was made with a tablespoon of ground turmeric and boiling water. I let the turmeric / water solution sit overnight but did not strain off the turmeric.
The coffee and beet dyes were the simplest. I used brewed left over coffee and beet juice from canned beets. Both of these solutions were room temperature.
With all the dyes at room temperature we added our hard boiled eggs and let them sit for half an hour. The longer the eggs sit in the dye the darker the eggs will become.
Here is a picture of the dyes.
Here are the eggs after dying.
